New Zealand Māori Hockey Incorporated (NZMH), Society No. 1650017, is pleased to announce that it has accepted an invitation, facilitated by Hockey New Zealand, to participate in the Indian Centenary of Sport celebrations in November 2026. The invitation includes the opportunity to field a New Zealand Māori men’s hockey team.
The celebrations mark 100 years since the Indian Army hockey team’s historic tour of New Zealand in 1926, which established a lasting sporting connection between India and Aotearoa New Zealand.
The centenary programme includes a three-match international series between the Vantage Black Sticks Men and India in Auckland on 19, 21 and 22 November 2026.
Working alongside Hockey New Zealand (HNZ) and the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), NZMH has confirmed two fixtures for the New Zealand Māori Men’s Invitational Hockey Team as part of the Indian Centenary of Sport celebrations.
The team will face the Indian Armed Forces at Kāpiti on 14 November 2026 at 2.00 pm, followed by a match against Falcons PHL at NHS Wellington on 15 November 2026.
An opportunity for Māori players
NZMH welcomes the opportunity for eligible Māori men’s hockey players from across Aotearoa to be considered for selection, regardless of their rohe, club or current hockey affiliation.
A designated selection group will oversee a fair and transparent selection process. Eligibility requirements, selection criteria and player commitments will be communicated once arrangements are finalised. Players will retain the choice to accept or decline an invitation to participate.
NZMH Chairperson Gail Ambler said:
“This is a significant opportunity to bring Māori hockey players together, celebrate who we are and contribute to an important occasion in Aotearoa New Zealand’s hockey history.
“We acknowledge Hockey New Zealand’s role in facilitating this opportunity and value the chance to contribute to a centenary celebration that recognises the longstanding sporting connections between India and Aotearoa New Zealand.
“Our priority is to provide a positive and meaningful experience for Māori players. We want our participation to reflect the pride, mana, kotahitanga and collective strength of Māori hockey.”
Further details about player selection, confirmed fixtures and participation arrangements will be announced as they are finalised.
