Powhiri (welcoming ceremony)
The National Māori Hockey Tournament Powhiri, hosted by Te Taitokeru this year, brought together haupoi iwi and whanau to celebrate their culture and love for hockey. The event was filled with excitement, as many attendees reunited for the first time since the previous tournament in Palmerston North. A moment of respect ensued as the participants gathered at the waharoa, where the karanga (welcoming call) from tangata whenua welcomed them onto the whenua with warmth.

Whakawhiwhi (Awards)
This year, we proudly recognized Margi Kay with a coveted NZ Māori Hockey Life Membership, a testament to her contributions and dedication to the sport. We also celebrated Joy Ripia’s achievement in receiving the prestigious 2023 Life Membership award.
Additionally, Khalarn Mason (Waiariki) and Kaea Elliot (Taitokerau) were honoured with the Herewini Whānau Hockey Scholarship, highlighting their commitment and potential in the game.
NZ Māori Hockey Representative Selections
One of the standout moments of the po whakangahau is the traditional selection of the NZ Māori Hockey junior U21 representative squads for the tournament. This ceremony not only showcases the talent of our young athletes but also honors the cultural significance of representing their iwi on a national stage.
Celebrating our Tournament Officials & Umpires
2024 was an excellent year for officials at National Māori Tournament. The spirit of whanaungatanga was obvious from both those who were having their first Māori hockey experience and those who had umpired here previously.
On behalf of David and I, I want to thank those who travelled to Whangārei as well as our fantastic local support. The whanaungatanga and manaakitanga from Tai Tokerau was amazing and our team have created many lifelong memories and friends.
Our rōpū performed beautifully at the Pō Whakangahau for the second year running. Ka rawe!
We are looking forward to Tāmaki Makaurau in 2025 with many officials returning and hopefully others getting an opportunity to get involved as well. – Max Beech
